Tour Summary

  • Catch a flight from Addis to Drive to Michibiny to kick off your adventure with a hike to Sankaber.
  • One way hike to Geech, passing through some stunning viewpoints.
  • Summit Imet Gogo and
  • Reach to top of the world as you summit Ethiopia’s tallest peak, Ras Dashen.

Itinerary

Day 1. Simien National Park

A connecting flight from Addis Ababa gets you in to Gondar, where your local guide will be waiting for you. You’ll then head towards Michibiny, situated near the entrance of the Simien Mountains National Park. The drive from Gondar to Michibiny is around 2.5 hours. You’ll stop briefly while your guides arrange all the necessary provisions and arrangements for your adventure. Flight Addis Ababa to Gondar. Drive (2.5 hrs) Gondar to Michibiny. Your journey into the mountains begins with a 3 hour hike to Sankaber, your first camp. The hike is gentle and allows you to acclimatize as you’re introduced the sensational views of the Simiens.
Accommodation: Camping at Sankaber.
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 2. Simien Mountains Park

Today’s hike takes you from Sankaber to Geech. En route, you’ll likely meet some of the Simien Mountains’ famed wildlife, including Gelada Baboons, Klipsringer and Walia Ibex.
A highlight of today’s trek is Genbar Falls, a waterfall over a sobering 500m sheer drop, which you’ll see from the opposite side of the ridge. After a break for lunch, you’ll carry on towards Geech, a remote traditional village with thatched roofs. Geech camp is a great spot to watch the sun go down over the range and you’ll often see troops of Gelada baboons climbing down the precipitous slopes to their sleeping quarters in caves in cliffs below.
Accommodation: Camping at Geech
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3. Simien Mountains Park

Today is a 7-8 hour trek from Geech to Chennek via the incredible Imet Gogo and Inataye. Imet Gogo, standing at nearly 4000m, affords unbelievable panoramic views of the entire Simien range.  If that isn’t enough, Iantaye stands at a sobering 4070m.If you can pull yourself away from the views, the remaining trek to Chennek is pleasant.
Accommodation: Camping at Chennek
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4. Simien Mountains Park

Mount Buahit is Ethiopia’s third highest peak, standing at an impressive 4430 metre. Your route to Mount Buahit follows footpaths off the road alongside a stream that trickles down the hill. This is quite a steep walk, but you can take regular breaks at great view points en route. This is your best chance to see Walia Ibex.
At the summit, you’re rewarded with phenomenal views across the entire Simiens range. Head back down the trail from Buahit which drops down out of the park and into farmland. Pass through the new settlement of Tiru Leba and stop here for a (well deserved) soft drink or beer. The trail continues down to a small stream at the bottom (which can become unsurpassable in the height of the rainy season), before heading up the rail on the eastern side of the village of Ambiko where a simple campsite awaits. (psst, the local committee sell beers for around $2 a pop, well worth a little splurge…)
Accommodation: Camping at Chennek.
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5. Simien Mountains Park

Today is undoubtedly a highlight of the tour as you summit Ethiopia’s tallest mountain: Ras Dashen. Start early and take it slow (10-11 hours of hiking today), admiring the views along the way. By late morning, you’ll arrive at the moorland top where the dirt road disappears and gives way to remote villages as your trail turns north east and snakes up the final peak. In true explorer fashion, reaching the summit requires a couple of hand holds and maneuvers (nothing too challenging) as you scramble to the top. Now relax and enjoy the unbelievable view from 4533 meters up.
When you can finally tear yourself away from the view, head north east and make for the village of Menteber, where a camp awaits.
Accommodation: Camping at Ambiko
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6. Simien Mountains Park

Today marks your last day in the Simien Mountains. A 7-8 hour trek takes you from Ambiko to Chennek, where you’ll spend your final night in the fantastic Simien Mountains.
Accommodation: Camping at Chennek
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7. Addis Ababa

In the morning, your driver will take you from Chennek to Gondar (3.5 hours). Catch a flight from Gondar to Addis Ababa to continue your journey or travel home. Enquire about this module if you’d like to include it as part of a longer itinerary.

Tour Summary

Explore the Simien Mountains from a luxury lodge perched high in the escarpment, discover the architectural remains of ancient civilizations, and watch the sun set over the sandstone cliffs of Tigray. The Historic North Circuit is a flagship itinerary in the northern highlands, combining all the highlights north of Addis along a perfectly paced itinerary.

Itinerary

Day 1: The adventure begins

Fly to Addis Ababa, where you will be met at the airport. After a transfer to your hotel, enjoy a little down time by the pool, before taking your first steps into the city. The Italian-built Piazza sits next to famous markets and bustling streets. Nearby are the Grand Anwar Mosque and the Ragual Church. The Mosque and church are within a stone’s throw of each other, highlighting the peace between different religions in Ethiopia. Get lost in Mercato, the largest open air market in Africa. Its labyrinthine alleys are perfect for people watching or enjoying a coffee. Coffee ceremonies here are famous and a source of pride, be sure to try to experience this at least once on your trip!
Venture to the National Museum to see how it all started: meet Lucy, the 3.2 million year old fossilized skeleton here. Her discovery re-wrote the story of human evolution, as she was found to have walked on two legs. See the Holy Trinity Cathedral, famed for its copper dome and neo-baroque architecture. It houses the tombs of the former Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassi, and the British suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst. A short drive up Mount Entoto will take you to the Palace of Emperor Menelik II. From this vantage point, you have an excellent view of the city. On the way back to Addis, perhaps stop by Shiro Meda, the biggest garment market in the country, where hundreds of vendors line the busy Entoto Road and sell hand woven traditional cloths.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional dinner at one of the capital’s fantastic cultural restaurants.
Accommodation: Caravan Hotel
Meal Plan: Bed & Breakfast

Day 2: Bahir Dar

From Addis, you’ll take a one hour flight north to Bahir Dar. Here, your guide will accompany you on a boat trip on Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake. Visit some of the peaceful monasteries nestled on the islands and peninsulas around the lake and wander through coffee plantations, enjoy some of the local brew and meet local farmers.
As the monasteries were used for religious retreats, the lake and its islands serve as an unofficial nature reserve. Look out for white pelicans and ‘air breathing’ catfish. Your boat tour will end at Zege peninsula. There is a short path walk towards Ura Kidrane Mehret, arguably the most beautiful of all the churches at Lake Tana, with hundred-year-old characterful frescoes.
Later venture towards the only outflow of the lake: Blue Nile Falls. These 42 metre falls create such large amounts of spray that they are known in Amharic (Ethiopia’s official language) as ‘Tis Abay’ meaning ‘Smoking Water’. A short distance down the Blue Nile lies a stone bridge built in 1626: potentially one of the famed seven stone bridges built by the emperor Fasilides. This river and another, the White Nile, are the two main tributaries to the Nile, the world’s longest river.
Accommodation: Blue Nile Resort
Meal Plan: Bed & Breakfast

Day 3: Lalibela

From Bahir Dar, a short flight takes you to Lalibela, home of the rock-hewn churches and a World Heritage Site. These eleven structures are world-famous, having been built in the 12-13th century and carved out of single pieces of rock. Haile Selassi reportedly risked his life to make a solo pilgrimage here during the war with Italy, seeking clarity and guidance.
Discover Biete Medhane Alem (House of the Savior of the world), believed to be the world’s largest monolithic church, before navigating through the system of trenches to arrive at Biete Ghiorgis (House of St. George), the most famous and isolated of all the structures. It’s worth spending a day wandering through these mazes of rock and soaking up the heritage. If you’ve time, there is also a wonderful hike to a monastery up on the mountainside.
Finish the day with a delicious dinner in the famous Ben Abeba restaurant, a crazy structure of steel and concrete overlooking the hills and valleys of the mountains.
N.B. It’s often worth spending more than one night in Lalibela to really soak it up. An extra day also gives you the opportunity to explore some of the wonders in the highlands around Lalibela.
Accommodation: Top Twelve Hotel
Meal Plan: Bed & Breakfast

Day 4: Gondar (2,133m)

Spend the morning visiting the remaining rock-hewn churches in Lalibela. Catch a midday flight to Gondar, the old capital of the country. Your first stop will be Debre Berhan Selassie Church, whose heavy and unassuming stone facade hides the colourful frescoes inside.
After this you will head to the well-preserved Fasil Gebbi in Gondar, described by some as the ‘Camelot of Africa’ for a guided tour. Now known as the Royal Enclosure, this was initially founded in 1636 and built by Emperor Fasilides as his home, but successive emperors and rulers added to his blueprint. Now, the buildings span over 70,000 square meters of land and include palaces, libraries, two lion houses, royal baths, and a women’s vocational school built by Mentewab, the Empress of Ethiopia. Within the enclosure there are multiple architectural styles and influences jostling for position. The influences include Indian, Portuguese, Moorish and Aksumite.
Accommodation: Goha Hotel
Meal Plan: Bed & Breakfast

Day 5: Simien Mountains National Park – Gondar – Debark to Sankaber (3,200m) 2-3 hours / 7km.

A car will pick you up from your hotel in Gondar take you to Debark, the headquarters of the Simien Mountains National Park. Here you’ll meet with your trek leader and scout. You’ll take a 4×4 some of the way to your first camp at Sankaber, but you will walk the final stretch (approximately 3 hours) in order to acclimatize to the altitude.
Ascending to over 3,000m above sea level and with a jagged landscape, you’ll be stunned by the views from the offset. You’ll be met with drinks, a tasty and hearty dinner, and a campsite in Sankaber where you can sit around the fire and swap stories with guides and other trekkers.
Accommodation: Camping at Sankaber
Accommodation Upgrade Options: Possible to replace camping in the Simiens with lodge stays, enquire for details.
Meal Plan: Bed & Breakfast

Day 6: Simien Mountains National Park – Sankaber (3,200 m) – Geech (3,600m). 7-8 hours / 15km.

The first full day of hiking starts with breakfast, and then a trail along the ridge. This gives you a vantage point and incredible views over the foothills some 800m below. The mountains are known worldwide for their biodiversity: Ethiopia’s placement on the equator makes this mountain range a particularly temperate one. Your guides will point out flora and fauna of note, but regular sightings on this trail are of Gelada Baboons, Kilpspringer and Ibex. From these heights, you’ll be able to watch birds of prey soar on the thermals below.
A highlight of today’s path is Genbar Falls, a waterfall over a sobering 500m sheer drop which you’ll see from the opposite side of the ridge. After a break for lunch, you’ll carry on towards Geech, a remote traditional village with thatched roofs. This is the perfect opportunity for a booster: some coffee and injera. Then onwards to the camp which is a great spot for watching the sunset.
Accommodation: Camping at Geech
Accommodation Upgrade Options: Possible to replace camping in the Simiens with lodge stays, enquire for details.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Simien Mountains National Park – Geech (3,600m) – Inayte (4,070m) – Chennek (3,600m) – 7 hours, 15km.

Most of today’s path hugs the edge of the ridge. You’ll drop down through a forest of Giant Hazel before rising back to open grassland and continuing on your ascent up to Inyate. The views from the top are monumental. After recovering from the climb and the view, you’ll descend towards Chenek camp. This camp is well known for its visitors: Wallia Ibex and Gelada Baboons.
Accommodation: Camping at Chennek
Accommodation Upgrade Options: Possible to replace camping in the Simiens with lodge stays, enquire for details.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8: Simien Mountains National Park – Mount Buahit (4,430m) 5-6 hours

Today you’ll reach the highest point of the trek so far. The day will start with a gentle trek up the Buhait pass before the trail steepens. The climb will test but reward you, with the jagged and steep terrain giving way to striking views once you reach the summit. As with the other areas, wildlife is plentiful here and people have spotted the elusive Ethiopian Wolf as well as Ibex, monkeys and an array of bird life.
N.B. it’s possible to replace camping in the Simiens with lodge stays, or extend/reduce the amount of camping in the Simiens depending on your interests and fitness levels.
Accommodation: Camping at Chennek
Accommodation Upgrade Options: Possible to replace camping in the Simiens with lodge stays, enquire for details.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9: Axum

After breakfast, drive down the switchbacks (4-6 hours) to Axum, Ethiopia’s most religious city which is home to an impressive display of Obelisks. The city is purported to have been the home of the Queen of Sheba. Rumor has it that the lost Arc of the Covenant is in the Church of St Mary of Zion. A short walk through the cobbled streets brings you to the stelae fields. Some of the 4th century AD granite structures rise to over 23 meters.

Accommodation: Sabean Hotel
Meal Plan: Breakfast

Day 10: Gheralta Lodge

Head to Gheralta Lodge, the perfect way to end your adventure around northern Ethiopia.
After lunch at the lodge, explore some of the rock-churches in the region. The rock churches of Tigray are astounding not just for their history, rock carvings and paintings, but also for their representation of the religious commitment of the local people. Built high into the cliff face, some of these churches are only accessible through climbing the vertical cliff, and yet they’re still used by local Ethiopians of all ages. The views from inside the churches is extraordinary. The view as the sunsets behind the mountains and the sky illuminates in dark reds, yellows and oranges is the perfect end to your adventure.
Accommodation: Gheralta Lodge
Meal Plan: Breakfast

Day 11: Addis Ababa to Home.

Head to Mekele airport and visit two fantastic churches en-route. Fly to Addis Ababa where your Ethiopian adventure will draw to a close. Be sure to squeeze in a coffee and some market walks before you head home.
N.B. It is easy to adjust the start/end of your adventure to line up with your international flights.

Catch a late morning flight from Axum to Lalibela. Spend the afternoon exploring the various clusters of rock-hewn churches. You’ll begin with the north-western cluster: Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, and Bet Danaghel. Our fantastic local guides will help you understand the churches historic significance of this World Heritage Site. If you’re lucky enough to visit during one of the religious festivals, you’ll be a part of something few people ever experience.

Accommodation: Top Twelve Hotel

Day 5:

Your day starts with an early morning service before visiting the south-eastern cluster of churches: Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanual, and Bet Abba Libanos. Finally, visit the most famous of all the churches – Bet Giyorgis. If you’ve done any research into Lalibela, you’ll have seen pictures of Bet Giyorgis. It’s the best preserved of all the churches and is a sure highlight of any visit of Lalibela.
In the afternoon, you can hike for around 4-7 hours to Yimhrehane Kristos, an under-appreciated gem of Lalibela. In stark contrast to the famous rock-hewn churches, Yimrehane Kristos is built rather than excavated, and is likely to pre-date the rock-hewn churches by nearly a century. The elaborate decoration of the interior is juxtaposed by the mummified bodies that inhabit the caves behind the church.
Alternatively, a 5 hour hike leads you to Asheton Maryam church, situation 4000 meters up in the hills of Lalibela. Any trip to Lalibela is incomplete without an evening dinner at the phenomenal Ben Abeba restaurant.

Tour Summary

Experience the breathtaking majesty of the Simien Mountains on this comprehensive tour of the ‘Roof of Africa’. Trek to peaks breaching 4,000 meters, experience the panoramic vistas, cross the rivers that flow into the lowlands and get up close with endemic Gelada Baboons and other rare and endemic flora and fauna.

Itinerary

Day 1: Pickup from Gondar, Bahir Dar or Debark.

A car will pick you up and take you to the Simien Mountains National Park. Here, you’ll meet with your trek leader, who’ll talk you through all aspects of your upcoming adventure through the mountains. Your first destination is Sankaber camp. After driving into the park, the last 2-3 hours or so will be an acclimatization hike, but you’re more than welcome to hike the entire distance if you want to get stuck in. You’ll ascend over 3000 meters above sea level, surrounded by jagged peaks and Gelada Baboons. Once you arrive at Sankaber, you’ll be welcomed with drinks and a delicious dinner at the campsite.
Route: Debark to Sankaber (3,200m)
Length of hike: 2-3 hours, 7km
Accommodation: Camping at Sankaber
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Simien Mountains National Park.

The first day of hiking starts with a nourishing breakfast before you head out to the trail along the ridge. There’s a wonderful vantage point which offers some incredible views over the foothills some 800 metres below. The mountains are known worldwide for their biodiversity and your guide will point out all point out flora and fauna of note. Along the trail, Gelada Baboons, Klipspringer and Walia Ibex make regular appearances and birds soar on the thermals below.
Route: Sankaber (3,200 m) – Geech (3,600m)
Length of hike: 5-6 hours/15km
Accommodation: Camping at Geech
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Trek to Imet Gogo (3,925m)

Today you’ll head to Imet Gogo, a headland at the edge of a ridge that stands close to 4000 meters with unbelievable 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. You can see west, back towards Sankaber and Geech, and south east along a large Gorge towards tomorrow’s destination, Inyate.
Next take the trail through Giant Erica woodlands before emerging on the moorland at Inatye, the second highest peak in the western part of the park. Tonight you’ll spend the evening at Chenek camp which is often the best spot to see both Ethiopian wolves and Walia Ibex.
Route: Geech – Imet Gogo- Chenek
Length of hike: 7-8 hours/18km
Accommodation: Camping at Chenek
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4:  Mount Buahit (4,430m)

Route: Chenek to Ambiko
Length of hike: 5-6 hours
Accommodation: Camping at Ambiko
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Ras Dashen (4533m)

Today is undoubtedly a highlight of the tour as you summit Ethiopia’s tallest mountain: Ras Dashen. Start early and take it slow, admiring the views along the way. Now relax and enjoy the unbelievable view from 4533 meters up…
When you can finally tear yourself away from the view, head north east and make for the village of Menteber, where a camp awaits.
Route: Ambiko to Menteber
Length of hike: 11 hours/23km
Accommodation: Camping at Menteber Village
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Kiddus Yared (4453 metres)

Rise with the sun over some warming porridge before starting your ascent up Kiddus Yared, the second highest peak in the Simien range. Afterwards, the trail follows the ridge westward – for those who haven’t had quite enough mountain-conquering, you can trek up Abba Yared at 4409 metres before joining the livestock paths that head towards your campsite at Arkwassie. From here, it’s pretty much all downhill as you press on to our campsite.
Route: Menteber to Arkwassie
Length of hike: 12 hours/25km
Accommodation: Camping at Arkwassie
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: After a relaxing breakfast, head over the ridge and down into the lowlands.

The path clings to the highlands and leads to a pretty location called Sona, before winding down off the mountains and into the river systems below. The scenery here is fantastic, especially if you’re coming just after the rainy season and the flowers are in full bloom. At the bottom, swim in the rivers at an altitude of around 2000 meters.
Continue on to your campsite at Mekerabiya, a pretty village underneath Imet Gogo. With temperatures warmer than previous days, this is a great spot to relax and enjoy the views of the mountain tops in the distance.
Route: Arkwassie to Mekerabiya
Length of hike: 7-8 hours/21km
Accommodation: Camping at Mekerabiya
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8:  Set off along the river valley and back over onto the ridge.

This is the easiest walk of the trip and is a real treat, with attractive villages and farmland peppering the trail and the omnipresent peaks of the Simein range in background. Enjoy another swim and have a coffee in one of the villages before arriving at the picturesque village of Mullit.
Route: Mekerabiya to Mullit
Length of hike: 5-6 hours/17km
Accommodation: Camping at Mullit
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9 : From Mullit it’s a short 2 hour walk to the nearby roadside town of Adi Arkay.

Here you can have a coffee or beer while your gear is loaded on transport for your joinery back to Gondar. Catch the evening flight to Addis Ababa.

Tour Summary

A geological depression caused by the continental drift of three tectonic plates, the Danakil Depression is one of Earth’s most unusual environments. Renowned as the ‘hottest place on the planet’ and home to salt lakes, lava lakes, volcanoes, and colorful acidic springs – it’s a wonderful, alien environment. Bubbling volcanoes light up the night sky, sulphurous mounds of yellow contort into other-worldly shapes, and mirages of camels cross lakes of salt. Lying 100m and more below sea level, the Danakil Depression is about the hottest and most inhospitable place on earth. In fact it’s so surreal that it doesn’t feel like part of earth at all. If you want genuine, raw adventure, few corners of the globe can match this overwhelming wilderness. But come prepared because with temperatures frequently saying hello to 50°C and appalling ‘roads’, visiting this region is more an expedition than a tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Mekele to Danakil

At Mekele, you’ll meet the rest of your tour group and pile into the Toyota Land cruisers that will take you into the Danakil in convoy. You’ll begin the drive into the Danakil at around 9AM. The roads leading out of Mekele are smooth and asphalted, and you drive further out of town there are some wonderful views of the Tigrayan landscape. As you drive further towards the Afar region, the roads get rougher until you reach the Danakil desert. Here, the roads are a maze of solidified lava, rock and sand with an occasional palm lined oasis.
Drive towards the small hamlet of Hamed Ela via Berhale. The Danakil Depression is said to ‘begin’ here. En route, you’ll likely see long camel caravans going in and out of the Danakil as they are loaded with salt, the main export of this region.
Note: The Journey into the Danakil Depression tour starts and ends in Mekele. The region is easily accessible via domestic flight from Addis Ababa, or along the historic circuit. Depending on your wider travel plans, we can make the necessary arrangements to get you to and from Mekele.
Activities: Drive Mekele to Hamed Ela, see camel caravans and visit Lake Karum (time permitting)
Accommodation: Camping at Hamed Ela
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Danakil to Mekele

After breakfast at Hamed Ela, you’ll drive to Ragad (Asebo) and watch the local Afar people mining the salt from the ground and loading on to the camel caravans.
Drive to Dallol, one of the most stunning geological phenomena on the planet. The kaleidoscopic landscape of greens, reds, and yellows formed by acidic springs and salt mounds create an alien landscape.
Visit Lake Karum, one of the two hyper-saline lakes of the Danakil Depression and one of the most visually striking lakes anywhere in the world. The sun set over Lake Karum is extraordinary.
Begin the drive back to Mekele to line up with a return flight to Addis Ababa or continue your onwards journey with us.
Activities: watch the salt miners, visit the Dallol cinder cone volcano, swim in Lake Afrera and the hot springs

Tour Summary

Erta Ale:
Visit the incredible Erta Ale volcano, and spend the night sleeping under the stars by the crater rim. The volcano contains an active lava lake where the thin charcoal crust is pierced by glowing red fissures of searing liquid lava below. The lava spits and splatters, and the lack of guard rails at the crater rim means you can peer directly into the fiery belly, known locally as the ‘gateway to hell’.
Lake Karum:
Drive by Lake Karum, one of the two hyper-saline lakes in the Danakil Depression. Lake Karum is one of the most visually striking lakes on Earth.
Lake Afrera:
Take a dip in Lake Afrera, the second hyper-saline lake in the region. The lake is kept liquid by a system of surrounding hot springs. The extreme salt content means you’ll float effortlessly like the Dead Sea, and you can wash off the salt in one of the nearby hot springs.
Dallol:
Discover Dallol, a cinder cone volcano in the Danakil Depression. Dallol is a canvas of bright green, reds, and yellows distributed across hundreds of hot acidic springs and mounds of salt deposits. It’s one of the most remarkable geological phenomena in the world.
Salt Pans and Camel Caravans:
The Danakil Desert contains miles of sprawling salt pans. Local Afar people manually extract the salt from the ground (working under the extreme Danakil sun) and transport the salt back to Mekele via camel caravans. Witnessing this process first-hand is a humbling experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Mekele to Erta Ale

At Mekele, you’ll meet the rest of your tour group and pile into the Toyota Landcruisers that will take you into the Danakil in convoy. You’ll stop for lunch at the roadside where your cooking team will do you proud, before continuing on to Aksoma, the base camp of the Erta Ale volcano. The drive from Mekele to Aksome is around 6 hours.
At Aksoma, your cooking team will prepare dinner which will be served around 5PM. As the sun begins to dip behind the horizon, you begin the 3 hour hike up Erta Ale. Camels will transport mattresses, blankets and additional water up the volcano.
The trek is a 3 hour walk along a gentle incline. You’ll reach the crater rim around 11PM, where the fiery lava lake awaits.
You’ll spend the night camping on the volcano at a makeshift campsite. Your sleeping materials will be provided for you and transported up the volcano by camels. It’s rough and ready, but that’s all part of the fun!
Note: The Journey into the Danakil Depression tour starts and ends in Mekele. The region is easily accessible via domestic flight from Addis Ababa, or along the historic circuit. Depending on your wider travel plans, we can make the necessary arrangements to get you to and from Mekele.

Day 2: Erta Ale to Hamed Ela

Note: the trekking routes can be amended depending on your fitness/preferred activity levels.
You’ll soon spot Enaf Community Guesthouse sitting atop the valley, where you’ll again be welcomed with snack and refreshments before settling down for dinner.

Built high into the cliff face, some of these churches are only accessibly through climbing the vertical cliff, and yet they’re still used by local Ethiopians of all ages.
We meet the rest of the group and jump into the reliable Toyota Land cruisers that will be our safe haven as we journey into one of the most inhospitable places on the planet. Stop for lunch at Kusrawat, before pressing on to Dodom, the basecamp at the base of the Erta Ale volcano.
Have dinner with your group around 6PM and prepare to hike up the volcano at around 7PM when the sun dips towards the horizon. The hike up Erta Ale takes about 3 hours across a gentle inclination of rocky terrain. The terrain itself is not challenging, but the heat of the region combined with the duration of the trek (3 hours) can make it challenging for some travelers.
We’ll arrive at the crater rim around midnight. The lava lake at Erta Ale is among the most stunning natural phenomena anywhere in the world. The bubbling magma cuts through the crusted charcoal surface like laser beams as smoke bellows from this ‘gateway to hell’.
Spend the night at nearby campsite on the volcano. Stones and rocks demarcate ‘rooms’ that fit up to 3 people, and camels transport mattresses and blankets to the top of the volcano.
Activities: Drive to Danakil Depression, Hike Erta Ale
Accommodation: Camping on the volcano
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10: Erta Ale to Hamed Ela

Rise early (5AM) and return to crater rim for one last look into the fiery caldera before beginning the 3 hour descent back to Dodom. Upon arrival at Dodom, enjoy breakfast before piling back into the Land cruisers.
Drive through the Danakil desert across the sprawling salt pans where you’ll find local Afar people working under the searing heat to cut the salt into blocks before loading onto camels. The camels are led back to nearby towns in ‘camel caravans’ as they transport the salt for export across the country. It’s a humbling site, and walking alongside these camel caravans in this distant corner of the world brings new appreciation to this ancient trade.
Arrive at the sparse settlement of Hamed Ela where your cooking team will once again do you proud. Enjoy refreshments and spend the evening under the stars on makeshift beds in the Danakil.
Activities: Drive through Danakil desert, witness salt mining and walk with camel caravans
Accommodation: Hamed Ela Settlement
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11: Dallol and Salt Lakes

Your final day in Ethiopia may be the most extraordinary of all as we head to the incredible Dallol volcano, visit Lake Karum and swim in Lake Afrera and its nearby hot springs.
Dallol is a cinder cone volcano in the Danakil Depression, although its unique geology means it lacks any of the archetypal volcanic looks. Instead, Dallol is a canvas of bright green, reds, and yellows distributed across hundreds of hot acidic springs and mounds of salt deposits. Characterized by bright, multi-colored springs, fissures, and geysers, and with average annual temperatures of 35°C (95°F), Dallol is one of the most visually compelling and geologically fascinating destinations on Earth. The landscape looks completely otherworldly.
Lakes Karum and Afrera are the two hyper-saline lakes in the Danakil Depression. Lake Karum (also known as Lake Asale) is one of the most visually striking lakes any in the world looking more looks more like an Arctic desert than a saline lake. The lake-bed is a jet white salt crust chequered in irregular contours that slowly becomes submerged in the clear water of Lake Karum. The transition from the salt pan to Salt Lake is so gradual that it feels as if the salt pan simply starts to shimmer and shine as it juts-off into the horizon.
Lake Afrera sits over 100m below sea level in the Danakil Depression, and contains the world’s lowest lying island, known as Deset. At the horizon, dormant volcanoes protrude out from Afrera’s shimmering green topology, and Afrera’s extreme salt concentration results in mounds of salt building up on the lakes shores. Unlike Lake Karum, Lake Afrera can be swam in, and its hypersaline nature leaves you floating weightlessly. It’s a refreshing respite on your journey in the Danakil, and there are nearby freshwater hot springs that make for natural jacuzzis to wash the salt off before jumping back into the air-conditioned Land cruisers.
As your exploration of the Danakil draws to a close, we drive back to Mekele to catch a late flight back to Addis Ababa to connect with your international flight home (note: we can arrange an overnight in Addis and additional services depending on your international flight departure schedule).
Activities: Explore the Martian landscape of Dallol, visit Lakes Afrera and Karum.
Accommodation: Camping on the volcano
Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Tour Summary

A true adventure across the northernmost reaches of Ethiopia. Experience community trekking on the plateaus of Tigray, where horizons stretch for miles, and distant mountain peaks morph into hazy silhouettes lit by the evening sun, and pockets of light and shadow dance on the undulating surface of the Tigrayan valleys below. Discover the alien environment of the Danakil Depression, home to lava lakes, acid springs, and sprawling salt lakes. With stunning scenery matched only by the charm and warmth of local Ethiopian hospitality, this trip is a sensory experience that’s as emotionally arresting as it is visually striking.

Itinerary
